A Celebration of Women’s Capacity for Full Enlightenment

Online via Zoom

Fear: “A brief, intense emotional response to an immediate present threat, triggering a physical fight-or-flight response.”

Dread: “An anticipated, lingering sense of inevitability about an unavoidable future danger or event, often accompanied by a heavy, sinking physical sensation.”

Fear (Pali bhaya) and dread (bherava) are familiar emotions for many of us, and increasingly present in a time when there seems to be so much to be fearful about. This half-day class will draw on teachings from the Bhayabherava Sutta (“Fear and Dread”), as well as a variety of Buddhist contemplative practices, to show the relationship between our thoughts and actions to magnify or soften our fear, and to cull tools to work with it in skillful ways. Instead of denying or avoiding our fear and dread, we can face them lovingly and courageously, using their energy to help us respond to the challenges we face in ways that benefit us and the world.
