Mentor Interviews

Every other month you will have an interview with one of the faculty. Below is a schedule of which teachers you will be interviewing with during which months. It is your responsibility to contact the teacher to schedule your interview at a mutually convenient time.

Mentor interviews provide checks and balances for your learning, and help develop your skills and help prepare you for future endeavors. These meetings are intended provide a supportive place to explore personal and/or professional development such as career goals, burnout, problems or frustrations in your current practice.

What do I talk about in a Mentor Interview?

A mentor interview is YOUR time. You set the date and time, you contact the teacher, you set the agenda, you choose the topics, you set the pace. As mentors, we follow your lead because you know what you need and we are here to support you. That being said, we find the most effective meetings encompass four areas:

A. Development of skills
B. Formation of chaplain identity or role
C. Current volunteer/field work
D. Dharma practice

Below are topics commonly addressed in mentor interviews. These are suggestions, not requirements.

•Review of a spiritual care situation from volunteer/service work
•Ethical issues, including boundaries
•Counter-transference
•Spiritual assessment
•Writing assignments
•Cultural competence, cultural humility
•Current events related to spiritual care
•Relationships with peers, faculty, supervisors at volunteer/field site
•Training-related stressors
•Career goals
•Developing confidence and competence
•Self-care
•The Paramitas
•The program overall: Questions, concerns regarding the SATI program sessions, topics, and/or peers, teachers relationships.
