Optional Activities

In addition to the workshops, assignments and volunteer work of the program, we offer some extra classes and learning opportunities to participants: a Reading and Writing Workshop and Field Trips.

Buddhist Chaplaincy Speaker Series

During the course of the year, we will invite individuals in the field of Buddhist Chaplaincy, or people working close to the field, to speak at a public event for the Sati Center. Following each event, the students of the Buddhist Chaplaincy Program will have an extra 30 minutes alone with each speaker to ask questions.

Field Trips

An important element of the program is going on self-generated field trips. For example, you might visit a church or temple of a religion you are unfamiliar with, attend an AA meeting if you have never done so, volunteer for a few hours at a homeless shelter or a soup kitchen, tag along with a hospital chaplain as he or she does her rounds.

Chaplain Consults

Vanessa Able will offer one on one consultations to participants of the program in the capacity of a chaplain. You are warmly invited to schedule a visit with her for support with your personal experiences around the program, learning and volunteer work. It is also a great opportunity to meet with a chaplain and experience the format of a visit.

A visit with a chaplain is characterized by a focus on spiritual and emotional expression, values, goals and challenges. A chaplain will listen, support and facilitate the kind of reflection that can lead to a more integrated spiritual awareness.

Visits with the chaplain are 30 minutes long, are initiated by the participant, and can be arranged by messaging Vanessa on Slack at any time.
