How the Program Works:
Course Components
Over the course of the Chaplaincy Training Program, you will participate in both group learning and private study.

Friday Workshops
Each workshop includes: meditation, a dharma talk, lectures and group discussion, lunch break, experiential learning exercises, and a brief ritual for use in chaplaincy. Each month’s workshop will have a theme from one of the Paramis (a.k.a. Paramitas). At the beginning of each workshop, a short dharma talk will be given on the parami of the month.
Mentor Interviews
Every other month you will have an interview with one of the faculty. Over the course of the program you will have the chance to interview with each of them. These are times to check in about the program, report about your experiences and challenges in offering spiritual care, and to explore your Dharma practice in relation to the work you are doing. A schedule will be provided after the first class. It is your responsibility to contact the teacher to schedule your interview at a mutually convenient time. Mentor Interviews can take place by Zoom or in person if feasible. For more information about Mentor Interviews, click here.
Speaker Series
During the course of the year, we invite individuals in the field of Buddhist Chaplaincy, or people working close to the field, to speak at a public event for the Sati Center. Following each event, the students of the Buddhist Chaplaincy Program will have an extra 30 minutes alone with each speaker to ask questions. The range of subjects presented in this series are tailored towards our training, and provide an opportunity for subject enrichment in parallel with our curriculum. Attendance to these Sunday morning events is expected for participants of the training. If you cannot make it, please catch up with the recording as soon as possible. For the upcoming schedule and links to recordings of previous talks, click here.
Small Groups
Students meet as 3-5 peers on a monthly basis. Each group decides when and how to meet, based on their schedules. The purpose is to integrate one’s learning through peer discussion and exploration of the curriculum, personal discoveries, and dharma practice experiences. Learning about group dynamics and how one participates in groups is very important for chaplains since chaplains often find themselves needing to work with a wide variety of groups. Small Groups take place in person if convenient, or by Zoom.
Buddies
At the start of the program, you will be assigned a “buddy” with whom to check in with every month about how things are going with the program. You might discuss your experiences in doing volunteer chaplaincy work, the class material, the readings, the Dharma reflections, or your field trips.
